Snoring can be a nuisance for you and for your loved ones. Even if you know you have a snoring problem, it is possible that there is more to your story than you imagine. For millions of people, sleep is perpetually disrupted by a condition easily mistaken for minor airway blockage. In our Turlock dental office, Dr. Davoud assists patients for whom this disruption indicates obstructive sleep apnea.

Do you snore excessively? Do you suffer from daytime fatigue? Do you awake during the night with shortness of breath? You may suffer from the life-threatening sleep disorder known as sleep apnea.

About 1 in every 15 Americans suffer from sleep apnea and it is a problem that many don’t even realize they might have. But what does this have to do with dentistry? Because sleep apnea is caused by an airway obstruction, the disorder can be treated through the mouth. The Thorton adjustable positioner, or Tap appliance is one of the more popular ways to treat sleep apnea. When the jawbone yes lax, the tongue and soft tissue obstruct the airway. The tap appliance advances the jaw bone, allowing the air to flow freely and making sleep more restful throughout the night. If you think you might suffer from sleep apnea, talk to your dentist today about possible treatment options.

When the sounds of snoring stop for brief moments, it is because air has stopped moving. Air that doesn't make it past the throat cannot reach the lungs. Without air in the lungs, no oxygenation occurs in the brain. Without oxygen, the brain panics and releases a burst of adrenaline. As breathing resumes, it may sound as if the sleeper is gasping or choking.
This particular sign of obstructive sleep apnea is enough to let you know a problem exists. Other indicators include:
  • Restless sleep
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Persistent irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Frequent morning sore throat or headaches
  • Difficulty retaining information
  • Depression or anxiety
You may have one or more of these symptoms or others when sleep is not sufficient for restorative effect. To restore optimal health and wellness, it is necessary to restore sleep. To do that, we look at ways to keep the airway open so all stages of sleep may occur on a nightly basis.
Historically, the standard of care for obstructive sleep apnea has been CPAP therapy. From a small bedside compressor, air travels through a hose and mask into the nose and airway. The force from this delivered air keeps the throat open.
CPAP therapy can be successful when compliance is high. The problem is the side effects of wearing a mask to sleep are too obtrusive. Whether the obstacle to compliance is physical or psychological discomfort, know that you have alternative options for restoring sleep.
Snoring and sleep apnea are big problems for those who suffer from them and their family members. It could also be more dangerous than you think. Oral appliances and CPAP are some of the available solutions, depending on patient preference. CALL (209) 666-8867 NOW OR BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

Many of our patients have found oral appliance therapy an ideal solution for restored sleep. Convenient, compact and comfortable, the oral appliance worn during sleep fits entirely into the mouth to promote proper airway position. In clinical trials and therapeutic practice, this method of treatment has been very successful.

Sleep Apnea Oral Device

Sleep Apnea Oral Device - Stop snoring with the help of Dr. Davoud! Watch what our happy patient says about Sleep Apnea Treatment.

Hi my name is Harold Schaffer and I was diagnosed with Sleep apnea moderate and then some of the choices were the CPAP machine and the oral device I had heard about. The CPAP machine, was not something that really appealed to me the way you had to wear it at night, probably would not wind up using it so I really wanted to pursue the oral device, and I was recommended to come to Dr. Davoud, and he did the molds and ordered the device and helped me adjust it and get to wear it, working and before the device, I would snore all the time, and wake up tired. My wife really complained about the snoring, and once we got the device adjusted – I completely quit snoring, if I forgot to put it in she notices in about an hour and wakes me up, but the device really does work for sleep apnea – you feel much better and it is a little bit inconvenient to you know always put that in and it feels a little funny in the morning when you do take it out and the jaw has to readjust and it is much easier to use and in my opinion, it would be than the CPAP and all of that – it is easier to take with you, it is in a little container so it does not take much room when you pack but I have been real happy with it – I think if only you have mild to moderate it is really worth the time and effort to try and it and see if it will work for you.
